HSE Launches Free Rapid Oral Test to Expand Hepatitis C Home Testing

The HSE expanded its online order‑to‑home hepatitis C testing service to include a new rapid oral swab self‑test. This painless, blood‑free test delivers results in about 20 minutes, making it easier for people to check their status. It complements the existing lab‑based self‑test and reflects a move towards more accessible, stigma‑free testing in Ireland.

Key features of the new test

  • Fast and discreet: Users collect an oral swab and receive results in 20 minutes. Kits arrive in discreet packaging and the service is confidential .
  • Immediate support: Anyone with a reactive result is connected to free confirmation testing and treatment services.
  • Who should test?: Those at higher risk include people who use or have used drugs, current or former prisoners, people experiencing homelessness and individuals born in countries where hepatitis C is more common.

Professor Aiden McCormick, Clinical Lead for the HSE National Hepatitis C Treatment Programme, emphasised that the new test is “painless” and urged anyone at risk to get tested. He noted that the programme has treated over 7,000 people with a 95% cure rate and is on track to meet World Health Organization elimination targets. Programme Lead Maria O’Brien added that the lab‑based test now includes optional hepatitis B and HIV testing, allowing people to access three vital tests with one sample.

Hepatitis C can lead to serious liver disease if left untreated.  Early detection and treatment are key to preventing long‑term complications and curbing transmission. For nurses and midwives, accessible testing means earlier intervention and improved outcomes for vulnerable populations.

The confidential hepatitis C test is free to order online from www.hse.ie/hepc.
