Nursing Union Condemns Racial Attacks on Healthcare Workers

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) today issued a strong condemnation following a rise in racially motivated attacks against healthcare staff. With more than 35,000 foreign-trained nurses and midwives working across Ireland, the union warned that abuse is becoming a daily reality for some frontline teams.
INMO General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha called for immediate action to protect staff, noting that several incidents had been reported in emergency departments and community services in recent weeks. “Our members deserve safety and dignity—no one should face racial harassment while caring for others,” she said.
The union has written to the Health Service Executive seeking an urgent review of security protocols and has asked the Department of Health to set up a national incident-reporting system that captures racial abuse. Hospitals have been advised to brief staff on support pathways and to liaise directly with Gardaí when cases occur.
