Maynooth University opens new School of Nursing

Maynooth University (MU) has announced Ireland’s newest School of Nursing, with the first intake of 30 students beginning a BSc in General Nursing this September following approval by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). Applications open 28 August via the CAO “Available Places” route.
MU says student numbers are planned to rise to 100 over four years, with an explicit commitment that 50% of entrants will come from further education and mature learners, broadening access to the profession.
The new programme emphasises a shift from hospital-centric education to community and primary care, aligning with Sláintecare and emerging community care hubs/minor injury units. Digital health innovation and sustainability are identified as core pillars of the curriculum.
Based in MU’s Eolas Building, the School includes a Clinical Skills and Simulation Laboratory mirroring hospital and community environments, allowing students to integrate theory with hands-on practice. Postgraduate pathways and research/innovation streams are planned as the School develops.
Government representatives and health leaders welcomed the move, highlighting its role in addressing workforce needs and expanding training capacity in one of Ireland’s fastest-growing regions.
